"On Golden Pond" Closes Canton's Season Opener
|
CANTON, GA (May 2, 2004) -
"On Golden Pond" closed the historic Canton Theatre's 2004 season opener with approximately
1,000 satisfied arts patrons.
The first production under the helm of the new theatre general manager, Dave Neace, quelled
any rumors of a theatre demise under the new regime. The show was very warmly received by the
community patrons, leaving the wanting more from the next production, "Nunsense Jamboree",
running June 10th-27th.
Best known as a 1981 film starring Henry Fond, Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn,
"On Golden Pond" tells the story of a summer spent by an aging couple at their
summer home on Golden Pond, their daughter who attempts to close the age-old
gap between herself and her father, and her new stepson who spends a month on
the pond with her parents. The play stars Bill Mann (Norman), Barbara McFann (Ethel),
Sherri Taylor (their daughter Chelsea), Will Fowlkes (their new son-in-law Bill Ray),
Jim Adams (Charlie the local mailman) and Michael Gold (their step-grandson Billy Ray).
The movie was adapted by Ernest Thompson from his stage play and was directed by Jim Adams,
who will also be directing a couple of other shows at the Canton Theatre later this year.
The movie won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Henry Fonda),
Best Actress in a Leading Role (Katharine Hepburn) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on
Material from Another Medium. It was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role
(Jane Fonda), Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music,
Original Score, Best Picture and Best Sound.
